BUST OF CALIGULA

BUST OF CALIGULA
Painted plaster bust of Roman emperor, Caligula, with worn patina. The clay model by Edouard Lanteri, French-born British sculptor and metallist and renowned teacher (1848-1917), was used as a demonstration for his timeless book, "Modelling and Sculpting the Human Figure." Lanteri's books are still common required texts for many sculpture courses. Lanteri was involved with the architectural and decorative sculpture for the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. His sculptures were mainly modelled in clay before being cast in bronze, though he also worked in stone. Lanteri was an intimate friend of Rodin, who referred to Lanteri as "Dear Master."
